A closer look at your supplement label

Everyday ingredients arranged in natural light

The front of a supplement bottle introduces the product. Turn it around to find the information that helps you understand what is actually in the pack.

Start with the serving size

On a US Supplement Facts panel, look for the serving size and the number of servings per container. A serving can include more than one capsule or tablet, so the number on the front of the pack is not always the number of servings.

Read amounts in context

Compare ingredient amounts per serving, including their units. Where a Daily Value has been established, the panel can also show the amount as a percentage of that reference value. Take care when comparing labels that use different serving sizes.

Check the rest of the pack

Look for the other ingredients list, directions, warnings and business contact details. The ingredient list may include materials used in a capsule or tablet as well as the named dietary ingredients.

These label basics are explained in the FDA questions and answers on dietary supplements and its nutrition labelling guide.

Keep questions close by

Save a photograph of the full label when asking a pharmacist or healthcare professional about a product. The exact formula and directions are more useful than the product name alone.

This article introduces US supplement label conventions. Labelling differs by market, and a label does not replace advice about your individual circumstances.
